Site Overview
The Mackay Institute of Research and Innovation (MIRI) is a Queensland based translational research and innovation centre. Our goal is to shape the future of the Mackay Hospital and Health Service (MHHS) by facilitating cutting-edge research and translation of scientific advances and new health knowledge into clinical practice. The MIRI innovation function provides expertise and support in various frameworks and rigorous methods of implementation science, but also extensive practical facilitation support for clinicians undertaking implementation projects through the MIRI Catalyst program. The Catalyst program provides direction over a suite of implementation projects with the aim of improving the quality and care provided to our communities. Catalyst will support clinicians with direction and capability development in the translation of research outcomes into improved health policy and practice, including health services evaluation to monitor the impact of implementation. Catalyst projects are focused on the organisation, funding and delivery of health services, with an emphasis on cost-effective analysis to deliver value for money in health systems. Although still in our infancy, having formed in 2017, The Cornerstone Program (Research Unit) have participated and continue to participate in Clinical Trials including Phase II and III trials, offering support to Clinicians who wish to contribute to Registries, University and Pharmacological Research as well as those wanting to undertake Investigator- Initiated Trials. Our clinical areas for potential research comprise of:
Anaesthesiology, Cardiovascular Oncology, Injuries and Accidents, Mental Health, Metabolic and Endocrine, Neurological, Oral and Gastrointestinal, Renal and Urogenital, Reproductive Health and Childbirth, Respiratory, Stroke, Orthopaedics, General Surgery
MIRI, as part of the Mackay Hospital and Health Service, provides support to 8 hospitals and four community health facilities. We are part of a contemporary organisation providing extensive health services in a range of regional, community and rural settings, to a population of around 180,000 people. Equipped with leading edge technology, the Mackay Base Hospital, where MIRI is situated, was the first fully digital public hospital with medications management in a regional area. As a member of the Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre (TAAHC), MIRI is also active in the new Teletrial concept developed between 4 HHSs covering rural and regional areas within Northern Queensland. This has given our community and hospital population the opportunity to participate in high quality clinical trials that would previously been outside of our area or would have seen them needing to travel great distances to be involved in.
